Former Manchester City Academy player Jeremy Wisten has died at the age of 17.
Wisten’s family confirmed his passing Sunday morning. No official reports have been released regarding the cause of death, but it is strongly believed that he committed suicide.
Malawi-born Wisten grew up in the Manchester area. He signed for City’s under-13 squad in 2016, having previously played for Altrincham Juniors and De La Salle FC. He signed to Manchester City’s football academy that same year and set his sights to emulating legendary centre-back Vincent Kompany.
Many of Wisten’s friends and teammates have paid their respects on social media. Academy graduate Cole Palmer posted a photo of him and Wisten with the caption “You Will Be Forever Missed.” Ex-teammate Dodi Rasumussen Elcircy posted a series of pictures, saying: “You will always be in my heart forever, rest easy in paradise your in a better place now.”
A GoFundMe page has been created in Wisten’s memory. It has raised over £6,000 towards the costs of the funeral.
